9 Ways To Make Extra Money in Singapore While Keeping Your Day Job

According to The Economist Intelligence Unit’s biannual report on the world’s most expensive cities, Singapore is again the most expensive city in the world for the fifth year in a row. As a Singaporean living in Singapore, this is the fact that I have to live with and go through together with the millions living here as well. From transportation to healthcare to housing, everything costs money which may be why you often see people queuing up at 7-Eleven to buy lottery tickets to strike it big so that they can say goodbye to their bosses.

However, if you are not one of the 2 lucky punters who won the $13.6m Toto Hongbao prize money, I’ve put together a practical list of 9 ways for you to make extra money in Singapore while keeping your day job. And until you strike it big in the lottery, you can use the 9 ways below to get extra money that you need to pay for bills, gifts, food, insurance etc

1. Rent out spare bedrooms (Propertyguru/Iproperty/99.co)
For those of you who own a house, you can consider renting out a bedroom or rent out a whole house if you have extra property that you do not live in. There are several websites out there that make it easy for you to market your room or property for rent. The popular property listing websites are Propertyguru, 99.co and iProperty. Alternatively, you can find a property agent to help you handle the marketing and legal work involved in renting out your room or property.

2. Invest in stocks, fixed deposits or Singapore Savings Bonds (Investingnote/Seedly)
If you have cash on hand that you do not need to use, you can consider investing it into stocks, fixed deposits, Singapore Savings Bonds or ETF. To decide on which investment products to put your money into, you will need to consider three main criteria which are the returns of the investment, the efforts required to manage it and the risk involved. For more information on the different investment products, you can check out Seedly blog post (https://blog.seedly.sg/cheat-sheet-what-are-the-common-investment-products-singapore/)
Besides Seedly, if you are looking for stocks ideas, you can check out InvestingNote that has a community of people who share their thoughts and ideas about investment.

3. Drive for private car sharing companies (Grab/Go jek)
If you have used private car sharing services like Uber or Grab, why not be the driver and make money instead. Currently, there is Grab and Go-Jek in Singapore which you can sign up to be a driver. And to earn additional income as a driver, you can consider putting some stuff to sell in the car to passengers like drinks or snacks.

4. Deliver food for food delivery companies (Deliveroo/Honestbee/Foodpanda/Grabfood)
If you do not own a car or prefer to have more flexibility to earn extra money, you can do food delivery. All you have to do is basically collect the food from the stall or restaurant and deliver it to the customer location. Is quite a straightforward and simple task. The popular companies out there that provide such platforms of work are Grabfood, honestbee, deliveroo and foodpanda.

5. Sell Stuff online (Carousell/Lazada/Shopee/Qoo10/Gumetree)
If you are looking to do some Mario Kondo to your home and “spark joy” by decluttering stuff from your house, do consider selling your stuff on Carousell or gumtree. It can be the guitar that has been collecting dust at the corner or the pile of books stacked on the bookshelf which no one has touched for years. As the saying goes, “one man trash is another man's treasure”. You may potentially have lots of stuff at home that you do not need and be able to sell it away for a huge sum of money.

6. Do GrabHitch (Grabhitch)
For those who are leisure drivers or drive often, why not be a grabhitch driver? Is quite a fuss free way to make money since you are fetching someone in the same direction and allow you to make friends too. Wrote about this in my previous post (Drivers who don't do this are losing $7,300 dollars every year (Grabhitch)

7. Provide Graphic Design services (Freelancer)
If you have a talent or flair in graphic design or would like to get paid for it, you can consider signing up on freelancer or fiverr to provide your service and get paid. Reaching out to businesses on Facebook or contact page of website is also another way to get customers.

8. Refer jobs to others and get referral fees (Nodeflair, 100offer)
Know a friend who is graduating soon and looking for a job or someone that is finding a new job? You can help them and yourself by referring them to job portals such as Nodeflair or 100offer if they have technical background. How it works is these platforms will give you a referral fees if your friend signs up for the job successfully through your link. If you are looking for a job, you can click on the company name to check out what are the job offers on Nodeflair or 100offer.

9. Help people to buy stuff online/offline and Earn Cashback (ShopBack)
My favorite tool whenever I shop online or eat outside is ShopBack. It allows me to earn cashback from online shopping and also recently, from offline merchants too. Their latest product, “ShopBack GO”, give you the power to earn in-store Cashback for your brick-and-mortar store transactions. If you have not yet join ShopBack, do hurry and sign up via the link here. You can also read up more about how to use ShopBack in my previous post (http://justbeingernest.blogspot.com/2017/03/smart-online-shoppers.html)
By simply offering to pay first in a group meal, you get to earn not just credit card rewards but also ShopBack Cashback with ShopBack GO if the restaurants is a partner merchant of ShopBack GO.
