Just by looking at the number of credit cards that i own in the picture above, you can definitely call me an avid credit card user. With the miles, cashback, rebates and discounts that you get to enjoy, it seems like a no-brainer to me in using credit card rather than cash for spending. There is no downside in having a credit card if you keep track of your purchases and make sure in paying the bills on time. However, I wasn't satisfied with such common reward strategy. I was searching online on how to take it to the next level and chanced upon this company called "CardUp" which is taking credit card rewards to another level.

So what exactly is CardUp?
CardUp is like a middleman who helps you to pay to your merchants that does not accept credit card payment but collects payment from you via credit card so that you can earn the benefits of the credit card. I have created a diagram below that shows the difference between the old method and how the new method using CardUp benefits you.
With the old method, you do not get any benefits or rewards since it is direct deduction from your bank account. With the new method using CardUp, you are now able to get some benefits from your credit card by paying to CardUp via credit card. CardUp will take 2.6% of the amount to be paid to merchants as a form of service fees.
For eg. If the bill to be paid is $100, you will be paying $102.60 to CardUp. $100 goes to the merchant and CardUp keeps $2.60 which about 10-20% of it will be their earnings since credit card processing fees is around the range of 1.8% to 2.5% depending on the percentage negotiated.
What can CardUp be used for?
Currently on their website, it shows that you can use them to pay for stuff like property rental, rental deposit, education, condo fees and insurance. Up and coming will be HDB fees, Income Tax, School bus, Mortgage and Car Servicing. I believe most people will find that these items for payment is usually in the form of cash either via nets, bank transfer or cheque which offers zero benefit to the payer. With CardUp, everything changes and you are 1 step closer to a holiday trip to Bali or getting that latest phone.
Plus the fact that you can use CardUp to schedule recurring payment such as your condo fees, school fees, insurance premium and etc makes it so much easier to earn rewards from your credit card!

What to take note?
Since there is a service fee involved of 2.6%, you would want to ensure that you are using a credit card that provide returns greater than 2.6% otherwise you are losing money and paying more which is not the purpose of using credit card for payment in the first place. Currently, I am using the DBS Live Fresh Card that offers 5% cashback which will eventually allow me to have around 2.53% cashback overall using CardUp. i have just started my account with Cardup, and I find that the not useful part is the arrangement of regular payment with IRAS. Cardup is not a GIRO per se, and IRAS only accept GIRO for instalments. so technically you have to pay your tax as a lump sum if you want to use via Cardup. This would be the same for other government or corporate bodies that do not accept other payment method outside of GIRO for instalments or regular payments.
ReplyDeleteHi beivied, you are right. Cardup is not able to perform GIRO payment to government or corporates. As these corporations only accept actual "cash" payment, hence the inconvenience of not being able to do GIRO is the ability for you to pay with your credit cards. Which allow you to earn credit card benefits and also delay the need of paying everything upfront with cash.
