For those of you who use Grab or Uber, you might have known by now that the Uber app will soon be deactivated in South East Asia. And everything that Uber has in South East Asia will belong to Grab who have finally grabbed the driver's seat of driving transportation in South East Asia.
However, today's blogpost is not about Grab taking over Uber in South East Asia but the GrabPay feature within the Grab app. I will share with you what is GrabPay, what you can use GrabPay for, how to use GrabPay, benefits of GrabPay and the powerful potential of GrabPay.
First up, as the name suggests, GrabPay is for doing payment within the Grab app. And there are currently two main parties that you can pay to with GrabPay. It is either the Grab rides that you take or merchants that you purchase goods and services from.
In order to make payment to the Grab Drivers or Grab Merchants with GrabPay, there are two ways to do it. You can either top up your GrabPay wallet with GrabPay credits. You will need to "pay" to Grab who will then top up your GrabPay wallet. Alternatively, you can add a credit card to your GrabPay wallet which will automatically deduct money when payment is done with GrabPay.
Below are the steps to top up your GrabPay wallet.
Step 1: Tap on the top right for GrabPay
Step 2: Select “Top-up GrabPay Credits”
Step 3: Choose your top-up method and follow the instructions
Step 4: Input the amount that you want to top-up. Minimum is $10
Step 5: After clicking submit, it will show that top up is successful
Step 6: You will then be able to see the updated balance of your GrabPay wallet.
With your GrabPay wallet topped up, you can use it to pay for either your Grab rides or in-store purchases. For Grab rides, below are the steps to make payment for your Grab rides with GrabPay credits.
Step 1: Select your Pick up and drop off location and click on the payment method
Step 2: Select GrabPay Credits
Step 4: Proceed to book your rides and your trip will be paid with GrabPay credits.
To make payment with your GrabPay wallet for in-store purchases, the steps are slightly different from paying for rides. However, the steps are rather straightforward as well and quite easy to grasp. Below are the steps to make payment via GrabPay for in-store purchases.
Step 1: Click on the GrabPay wallet
Step 2: Click on the Pay icon
Step 3: Scan the QR code of the merchant
Step 4: Input the amount to be paid to the merchant and slide to send payment
Up till now, you must be thinking, with so many mobile "wallet" in the market already, why should I even bother with GrabPay wallet? I too had the same thoughts as you too when I think about GrabPay. After all, what makes GrabPay any different from the rest such as DBS Paylah, Alipay, NetsPay and OCBC Pay Anyone. After much understanding and "analysis", I came to have a better understanding on how powerful GrabPay is.
Firstly, with the GrabPay credits, you can send credits to your anyone. It can be your children or your grandparents which they can use it to pay for Grab rides or Grab merchants. Instead of giving cash, you can now give GrabPay credits that can be used for purchasing rides or food or products. As Grab continue to expand the number of merchants accepting GrabPay, one can expect greater adoption rate.
Secondly, using GrabPay credits will also earn you GrabRewards points which can be used to redeem a variety of items or services that Grab has partnered with. Is like paying with your credit card and earning credit card rewards but is in the form of GrabRewards point.
Thirdly, with Grab presence in South East Asia, one can use GrabPay to pay for Grab rides or Grab in-store purchases that Grab is at. Imagine going to countries like Malaysia or Indonesia for holiday and still be able to use your GrabPay credits to purchase items or pay for rides just as though you are in Singapore.
Lastly, the balance of the GrabPay credits that you have cannot be withdrawn back as cash. This means that Grab is able to lower transaction cost since the GrabPay credits being paid between different parties can be circulated continuously without incurring any payment processing fees to VISA or Mastercard. And Grab will have access to a large pool of money for generating investment returns.
Now that you have read up on the benefits of GrabPay, do download the Grab app here and benefit from it just like me too! Do go ahead to use the app and let me know what you think about it. I personally feel that Grab is quite consumer-centric which is, of course, good for its users. Are you using GrabPay currently?
